Barcoding Life's Matrix: Sebastes Project |
| Subject: |
Science,AP Biology |
| |
Grade: |
12 |
| |
Description: |
This project engages students in the International Barcode of Life Project (IBOL). In this landmark project, students partner with scientists around the world to contribute to a genetic encyclopedia, cataloging the biodiversity of the Earth and contributing to species discovery. Students write a grant proposal to the school board to advocate for funding for the project. Specifically, our students focused on the Pacific Rockfish of the Channel Islands as part of the Barcoding Life's Matrix project hosted through Coastal Marine Biolabs with major funding through NSF. Students identify species, record specimen data, upload specimen data to the Barcode of Life Data System, generate DNA reference barcodes, edit barcode sequences using bioinformatics tools and software, and upload sequence data to the BOLD Management and Analysis subsystem. The project concludes with a PowerPoint presentation to the district Board to showcase how the grant funds were used to meet the... |

Surviving the Extremes |
| Subject: |
Science,Biology |
| |
Grade: |
9 |
| |
Description: |
This lesson is designed to introduce students to the homeostatic functions of the cardiovascular system. Students explore temperature and blood pressure regulation in the human body in extreme environments, the mechanisms by which they are maintained, and the damage that can be done when the body is pushed beyond its limits. Topics covered in this lesson include: the components of the cardiovascular system, the function of capillaries in regulating body core temperature, what blood pressure is, factors that influence blood pressure and body temperature, and the homeostatic control of both. A laboratory exercise using probeware allows students to gather data on changes in their own core body temperature when environmental temperatures change. They develop hypotheses, construct a scientific model, and collect and interpret data. Lastly, students utilize the information gathered in the laboratory to explain what happens when the body is pushed beyond it’s limits and undergoes d... |
