Title: Using Features of Text to Understand NonFiction

  Description: Reading comprehension standards require students to use the features of nonfiction text and interpret charts, graphs, etc.  This is a collaborative lesson for student teams to identify a feature of text and make a definition poster to present.  The teams rotate through sets of nonficiton reading on a pertinent topic, a unit of study for your classroom, previewing the book and looking at (pre-marked with sticky notes) a feature of text.  Next, the teams will create an "all about" book on an accessible topic and include the features of text in their book.  The solo application of text feature skills is practiced by marking up text features in Time for Kids or Scholastic News magazines and then sharing out their findings.  It seems simple, but without the terms and the purpose, many readers do not use the visual support provided in rich informational texts.  Previewing is a powerful reading strategy and uses features of text....
