Noses for Nectar |
| Subject: |
Science |
| |
Grade: |
K,1,2,3 |
| |
Description: |
Many plants depend on pollinating ans seed dispersal services of bats and other animals. When visiting plants, bats and other animals pick up pollen from one plant, carry it on their fur to other plants, and consequently, cross fertilize them. Another way in which bats are useful to the plant kingdom is through the dispersal of seeds. While in flight, the fruit eating bats excrete the seeds from the fruits they eat, therebydispersing the seeds to surrounding areas. In areas where bats are listed as endangered, plants and other wildlife are seriously threatened.
This activity will demonstrate how nectar eating bats contribute to plant pollination. Students will simulate a megabat feeding process.... |
